Graded MS64 by PCGS, this 1871 (Meiji 4) 50 Sen exhibits a bright appearance with ample underlying luster. This coin is of the 'Curved Tail' variety, which refers to the shape of the bottom 'tail' on the character for 'hon' (本) on the obverse. Of the four varieties for the 1871 50 Sen, this one is the scarcest according to PCGS population reports. While the coin's luster is extremely strong, scant contact marks hold this back from a gem grade.
This coin also displays an interesting die clash on the obverse, with features of the reverse sun, dot border, and wreath present.
