A beautifully toned example of an 1871 5 Sen (later variety) in choice BU condition. Both sides exhibit a gorgeous sunset-toned surface with splashes of blues and greens.
In Meiji year 4 there were two varieties of the 5 Sen (non-dragon) coin. The earlier variety featured 66 sunrays and 79 beads on the reverse, while the later variety featured 55 sunrays and 63 beads. In addition there are slight differences on the left side of the wreath.
