An alluring choice specimen of the Meiji 4 50 Sen featuring the popular dragon obverse/sunburst reverse. This example is far more lustrous than a typical MS63. While NGC does not attribute varieties, this is the 3 Spines (small dragon) version.
For Meiji year 4 there were two major varities based on the diameter of the coin and the number of spines that the dragon's flame overlaps (either three or two). The 3 Spines variety (19mm diameter) is the more common of the two.
