Graded MS62 by PCGS, this 1892 (Meiji 25) "Three Flames" Yen displays a pleasing, original patina with subtle silver-gray hues. Strong underlying luster breaks through attractively on both sides, particularly on the reverse. The impressive dragon design on the obverse and the intricate wreath and chrysanthemum crest on the reverse exhibit a strong strike, as evidenced by the well-defined details. This coin offers both originality and excellent eye-appeal.
This coin is of the "Three Flames" variety, identified by the three stylized flames on the dragon's right shoulder. The "Four Flames" variety features an additional flame in this location and is the scarcer of the two.
